Japanese cosmetics giant Shiseido Co. has announced it it has selected its corporate executive officer, Hisayuki Suekawa, as its new president, bringing in younger management as the company seeks to expand its global reach.

The 51-year-old Suekawa will succeed incumbent President Shinzo Maeda, 63, who will become chairman effective April 1.

During his six-year term, Maeda pushed to raise the company’s sales outside the home market, with Shiseido buying U.S. makeup company Bare Escentuals Inc. for $1.7 billion last year. Suekawa, who is also general manager of Shiseido’s business-planning department, played a key role in shaping the largest acquisition in the company’s 84-year history.

“We are still at an early stage of expanding globally so our challenge continues to be how we can further tap into the high-growth markets, especially in Asia,” Suekawa said at a news conference in Tokyo. He said the company will also seek to raise its presence in the U.S. and Europe.

While saying Shiseido will continue to seek mergers and acquisitions, he declined to provide details. The company is expected to unveil a new three-year business plan in April.

Suekawa, a graduate of Tokyo International University, joined the company in 1982.
